About Kate

My favorite description of my work has been ‘a refreshing take on traditional Catholic iconography.’ I create images that remind the viewer of God’s presence in our lives and invite contemplation of the sacred through the delicate beauty of illustrations.

Line fascinates me; it can sculpt a form by varying directionality or depict a change in value via its concentration. As I draw, I imagine that I am sculpting the image out of the paper by shaping it with pen lines. Such a simple mark can reproduce anything we see! I incorporate color sparingly to allow my line work to shine. When I do apply color, I use watercolors to mimic the luminosity of stained glass windows.

I still remember standing in the atrium of the National Gallery in D.C. for the first time when I was a sophomore in high school - that sense of awe and wonder when seeing something beautiful! Chasing that feeling is why I make art. It is like grasping at God, trying to capture just a little bit of His all-encompassing beauty, truth, and goodness that transcends all.
